AMED - Hediye Güneş Zenger, Director of Women's Policies of Peyas Municipality, stated that the Library of Women's Works opened within their municipality is not only a library but they also want to turn it into a memory centre.

Peoples' Equality and Democracy Party (DEM) Peyas Municipality inaugurated the Library of Women's Works in Park 75 in Peyas (Kayapınar) district of Amed. Hediye Güneş Zenger, Women's Policies Manager of Peyas Municipality, said that this idea has been discussed since 2019, and noted that they will further develop the library.

‘There are few examples’

Hediye Güneş Zenger said that one of their biggest goals immediately after the election was to take back the usurped women's spaces. Hediye Güneş Zenger, who stated that they also stated this in the women's election declaration, said, "It was one of our biggest goals to take back the usurped spaces and add new ones. The place we call the library of women's works or the women's memory centre will be a completely original workspace. As you know, there is an example in Istanbul. When we look at it in the world, we can say that there are not more than a handful of them."

‘The aim is to make it a memory centre’

Hediye Güneş Zenger pointed out that their biggest goal is to bring together the written and oral literature written for women and said: "Our aim is to bring together the works written by women or about women. This will be our first step. Our second step is to turn this place into a memory centre for women."

‘As Kayapınar Municipality, we wanted to lead the way’

Hediye Güneş Zenger noted that it is very difficult for women to access written works and emphasised that the works are either destroyed or are in a certain place and have very little visibility. Hediye Güneş Zenger said, "When we visit a library today, it is usually the works of men that attract our attention first. Because of this, we thought that there should be an original workspace and this idea developed in us. Of course, this idea is not new. It was an idea we have been discussing since 2019. As Kayapınar Municipality, we wanted to pioneer this."
