SÊRT - Following the appointment of a trustee to Sêrt Municipality, residents of the city started a sit-in protest in front of the municipality. 3 people who wanted to enter the municipality were detained.

Sêrt Co-Mayor Sofya Alağaş, who was sentenced to 6 years and 3 months in prison by Diyarbakır 5th Assize Court yesterday for the case filed against her for ‘being an illegal organisation member’ when she was a journalist, was dismissed and a trustee was appointed in her place. The police, who blockaded the municipality at 06.00 in the morning after the verdict, entered the municipality building and wanted to read the verdict to Sêrt Co-Mayors Sofya Alağaş and Mehmet Kaysi. However, the co-mayors and the citizens who came to the municipality after receiving the news of the trusteeship prevented the reading of the decision by clapping and chanting ‘trusteeship is usurpation’.

DEM Party Sêrt MP Sabahat Erdoğan Sarıtaş, who came to the municipality building, reacted against the trustee decision and stated that they would not accept the attack against the will of the people and that they would resist against the decision.

DEM Party Sêrt Provincial Organisation Co-Chairman Eşref Tekin stated that they will not accept the usurpation of will and said, ‘The usurping power, which could not take the municipality despite the carried votes and tricks, is usurping our municipality. These people went to the polls and elected co-chairs. This is a disrespect to the ballot box, a coup d'état.’

However, the police wanted to take the citizens and party members out of the municipality. When citizens and party members reacted to this, they were attacked by the police. DEM Party Sêrt Central District Co-Chair Şernas Çelepkolu, Democratic Regions Party (DBP) Sêrt Provincial Organisation Executive Muhammed Polat and municipality employee Ferhat Toprak were detained. After the attack, the crowd started a sit-in protest on Doğan Street in front of the municipality. The crowd chanted slogans such as "Trustee is a coup, no to coup", "Trustees will go, peoples will come."
