NEWS CENTRE - It has been learned that a 13-year-old sick child staying in a mosque in Qamishlo lost his life due to the cold.
The attacks carried out by HTS gangs against Rojava are causing a humanitarian disaster in the region. According to data shared by the People's Councils, 136,000 people, mostly from Afrin and Serêkaniyê, have migrated to the Cizre Canton from the countryside of Tebqa, Raqqa, Ain Issa and Hesekê as a result of the attacks that have continued since the beginning of January.
Displaced civilians are struggling to survive in mosques, schools, churches and hastily erected temporary shelters. The worsening winter conditions are exacerbating the crisis. Children, the elderly and those with chronic illnesses are particularly at risk of death due to the cold weather.
A child lost his life to the cold
Yesterday, it was learned that a 13-year-old sick child staying in a mosque in Qamishlo lost his life due to the cold. The inadequacy of health teams and the lack of heating facilities are causing concern that similar cases will increase.
Women and children make up the majority of the displaced population. Many mothers cannot find enough clothes and blankets to protect their babies from the cold. Inadequate hygiene conditions pose serious health risks, especially for babies.
Elderly people staying in shelters are also having a difficult time due to the cold weather and lack of access to healthcare. Many elderly citizens and those with chronic illnesses who need regular medication are unable to continue their treatment.
Baby products such as milk and nappies, heating materials such as blankets and stoves, food parcels, clean water sources, and medication and healthcare services are among the urgent priorities. However, the aid lorries sent by some aid organisations fall far short of meeting the need.
